Many businesses are not aware that some apprentices are entitled national minimum wages based on age rather than national minimum wage apprentice rate.
This leaves businesses open to claims of unlawful deduction of wages at tribunal from apprentices wishing to claim back underpayments.
The current national minimum wage rate for an apprentice as of the 1st April 2022 is £4.81
If the apprentice reaches the age of 19 and has completed the first year of their apprenticeship, they are then entitled to be paid the national minimum wage based on age rather than the lower above apprentice rate.
