Are you aware of the recent changes to statutory sick pay (SSP) self certification and doctors fit notes?

When are the changes to (SSP) self certification effective from?


  • The changes to statutory sick pay (SSP) self certification came into effect as from 10th December 2021


What are the changes to (SSP) self certification?


  • The statutory sick pay (SSP) self certification period has been extended from 7 days to 28 days
  • As an employer you can now no longer request proof of sickness / fitness to work earlier than 28 days from an employee.


Have the number of waiting days for statutory sick pay increased?


  • No, payment of statutory sick pay (SSP) is still subject to 3 unpaid waiting days
  • All other rules relating to SSP remain the same


How long will the changes to statutory sick pay (SSP) self certification last?


  • The changes to statutory sick pay (SSP) self certification are temporary to help elevate pressure on GP surgeries and the NHS. These changes may or may not be extended after the end of January.
