What are the changes to the national minimum wage rates for April 2024 ?


The most notable alteration in the April 2024 update is the expansion of the national living wage to encompass workers aged 21 and over. Previously restricted to those aged 23 and above, this top-tier rate now extends its reach to include a broader spectrum of the workforce.


This adjustment signifies a fundamental recognition of the financial responsibilities and challenges faced by individuals in their early twenties, reflecting a commitment to fairness and equality in the labour market.


Other adjustments to national minimum wage 2024


In addition to extending the national living wage, the April 2024 update introduces revised wage rates for different age brackets, acknowledging the varying levels of experience and responsibilities among workers.


For individuals aged 18 to 20, the new hourly rate stands at £8.60, a significant increase from the previous £7.49. Similarly, those aged 16 to 17 will now receive £6.40 per hour, up from £5.28, offering them a more substantial financial foundation as they embark on their career journeys.


Apprenticeships serve as invaluable pathways to skill development and career advancement for many individuals. Recognizing the importance of apprenticeships, the April 2024 update maintains the apprentice rate at £6.40 per hour, aligning it with the rate for workers aged 16 to 17.


This consistency ensures that apprentices receive fair compensation for their contributions to the workforce while undergoing essential training and mentorship.
